KOR Energy: The Beginning
A Graduate in Agricultural Sciences from Banaras Hindu University and Post Graduate in management in Finance and Marketing with 15 years of experience in the area of Banking, Wealth Management and Consumer Goods, Sushil Kumar Sarawgi began his career with consumer durable goods and then moved to the banking sector. Sushil’s last assignment in the job was with the ICICI bank as the regional head of the SME banking and corporate finance. In 2008, Sushil quit ICICI to start his own venture (which he later named as KOR Capital) where a group of ex bankers worked on mergers and acquisitions and financial consulting for SMEs and corporates.

In the last 3-4 years, the team was encountering more and more financing and mergers & acquisition proposals for the renewable energy sector. This basically stirred their interest in the sector and they began exploring it more. This further fuelled their interest in venturing into the energy sector. The interest later took shape of a fully fledged consulting and EPC company for Solar Energy Industry.

As in any other industry, the initial years were very challenging pertaining to the lack of professional approach and unavailability of competent manpower. Throwing light on the same, Sushil informs,“When we ventured into this space, the industry was in its nascent stage - specifically the rooftop energy segment. We spoke to people and perceived their misconceptions about solar power, solar installation. Understanding the need to change our focus from acquiring business to working on educating people about what benefits they are going to get from solar, we started approaching resident welfare association, societies and industry association for alerting and training them on solar activities. The approach was not to sell directly but to educate people more about what are the benefits that they are going to get if they move their energy consumption from conventional sources to renewable energy”.

This entire event experience changed the team’s approach towards selling and they found out that people were much more receptive. They were enthusiastic and after thorough research of what was imparted to them during the training sessions, they automatically approached team KOR Energy with their inquiries.

The Solar Services
An EPC and consultancy space providing end to end solution to clients for solar Energy in residential, commercial and institutional segments, KOR Energy helps their clients by reducing the energy cost through adoption of solar power. We have obtained a lot of repeat orders from the existing customers and more than 60 percent of our business comes through existing references,” he
mentions.

Further more, KOR Energy is currently managing the project management consultancy for one of the largest roof top solar projects in UP for which they have been rewarded recently. The team has used top of the line products that have never been used in India. “The product is only being used in the U.S. and UK market and for the first time in the roof top segment it is going to be used in India at a price that is almost equal to the price of the normal product. We have designed the entire procurement, system and everything in such a way that the customer gets the best product that is available in the market at a price that he is comfortable in paying,” he says.

He further adds, “We are very much transparent in our business practices when it comes to the price of the material procured, the margins that we are keeping. We have goodwill with almost all the suppliers in the market. We import materials from abroad and procure from India as well. There are certain projects where it is mandatory to use Indian products. There are many customers who are insisting on foreign and imported products so we have very good relations with Indian manufacturers and exporters from various countries. We are never required to keep a stock of thing with ourselves because it is a project based company - we procure as per the requirement of the project”.

Future Endeavors
After the initial years of hard work, team KOR Energy has grown exponentially in the year 2017. Originally concentrating in Delhi/NCR, the company has expanded to Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and looking for PAN India presence till 2018. “Our partners include Canadian Solar, ABB, Sungrow, Vikram Solar and Growatt; we with our partners are equipped to deliver the projects with best of industry standards. We cater our services to residences, societies, industries, schools, colleges, religious trusts and national and international funds looking for acquisition and financing opportunities in renewable energy space. Narrating about the future roadmap, Sushil says, “We want to be most preferred Engineering Procurement and Construction Company and Project Management Consultants in rooftop solar power space. We are developing best in class systems and procedures and highly trained manpower to execute such works in India as well as abroad. Our plan is to be listed company by financial year 2018-19”.
