In a recent interview with CNBC, OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, moderated expectations amid the frenzy around Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its transformational potential. Lightcap warned against the widespread notion that AI can completely transform enterprises in one fell swoop.
Lightcap emphasized a widespread misperception, saying, "I think the overhyped aspect is that, in one fell swoop, it can deliver substantive business change." He remarked on his regular contacts with businesses that want AI to provide immediate and comprehensive solutions. "We speak with a lot of companies that come in, and they want to kind of hang on us the thing that they've wanted to do for a long time - 'We want to get revenue growth back to 15% year over year,' or 'We want to cut X million dollars out of this cost line.'" And there is seldom a silver bullet solution."
Lightcap emphasized the intricacies inherent in the corporate sector, underlining AI's current limits. "There is never a single thing you can do with AI that completely solves a problem." And I think that's just a monument to how huge and complex the world is, and how these systems are still changing, still in their infancy."
Lightcap, on the other hand, put light on a lesser-told story, identifying an overlooked facet of AI's impact. He further said that the considerable amount of empowerment and enablement provided by these platforms to individual users. "The thing that we do see, and I think where they are underhyped, is the level of individual empowerment and enablement that these systems create for their end users."
Recognizing the unreported stories of individuals gaining fresh talents akin to superpowers,' Lightcap emphasized how AI tools enable previously inaccessible jobs. "That story is not told, and the things that we hear from our users or customers are about people who now have superpowers because of what the tools allow them to do, that those people couldn't previously do."
Meanwhile, Lightcap made no mention of the boardroom crisis that erupted last month at OpenAI, with Sam Altman being ousted and then rehired as CEO. "The last few weeks have brought the company together in ways that are difficult to describe." "I am extremely grateful to our team and deeply grateful to our customers and partners, who have been incredibly supportive throughout," he said.
