Consumer durable product production was hampered at Samsung's Chennai facility when about 900 manufacturing workers, or over half of the total staff, went on strike, according to industry sources.
According to the source, workers at the Samsung facility went on strike to seek a salary increase and better working conditions.
"Approximately 50% of Samsung plant workers in Chennai went on strike on Monday. The strike has an impact on manufacturing production," said the unnamed source to PTI.
Samsung is expected to employ 1,800 people at its Chennai facility, which manufactures consumer-durable items like as televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines.
When approached, a Samsung India spokeswoman stated, "The well-being of our staff is our primary priority. We regularly communicate with our employees to address any issues they may have while adhering to all rules and regulations. We will also make certain that there is no inconvenience to our customers."
Samsung sees India as a significant growth market. The Sriperumbudur facility, which opened in 2007, is one of two facilities operated by Samsung in India, the other being in Noida in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where smartphones are manufactured.
According to an industry source, Samsung has hired contract workers to guarantee that there are no major production hiccups ahead of the festive season in India when electronic sales are expected to increase.
