WhatsApp Bans 8.6 Million Accounts in India Due to Escalating User Complaints

By Consultants Review Team Tuesday, 05 November 2024

WhatsApp has released its most recent monthly report, which includes substantial insights into user complaints and account bans for September 2024. The latest monthly report highlights the platform's persistent issues in ensuring user safety and trust in India.

According to the data, which covers the period from September 1 to September 30, 2024, the chat business received 8,161 complaints from Indian users in September. A considerable proportion of these complaints, 3,744 in total, were especially about users appealing account bans. This high figure suggests that users are deeply concerned about the grounds for account suspensions and the procedures involved in reinstating accounts. Overall, WhatsApp took action on 97 accounts during this time period, either banning or restoring them based on complaints received.

The chat business received 870 complaints about aggressive activity on its platform. Despite the large volume of safety-related concerns, WhatsApp did not take action against any accounts based simply on these reports. Instead, the platform recommended users to use its in-app reporting mechanisms to address inappropriate activity.

"This enables WhatsApp to receive the most recent messages sent to the complaint by the reported user or group, as well as details on the complainant's recent interactions with the reported individual. According to our procedures, this is not documented as an action taken on the grievance report," the chat business clarified.

WhatsApp also suspended 8,584,000 accounts in India in September alone. Out of them, 1,658,000 accounts were proactively banned before users filed reports.

Furthermore, the audit observed that WhatsApp complied with two rulings from the Grievance Appellate Committee this month, demonstrating the platform's willingness to work with regulatory authorities to address customer concerns. WhatsApp's service continues to prioritize privacy, with end-to-end encryption protecting users' confidential messages from unauthorized access.
