The draft National Pharmacy Commission Bill, 2023, released by the Union Health Ministry, intends to repeal the Pharmacy Act of 1948 and replace the Pharmacy Council of India with a national commission.

The proposed bill would establish a pharmacy education system that would improve access to high-quality and affordable pharmacy or pharmaceutical education, ensure the availability of adequate and high-quality pharmacy professionals in all parts of the country, promote equitable and universal healthcare, and make pharmacy professionals' services available to all citizens. 

The draft law demands for a regular and transparent assessment of pharmacy institutions, the creation of an Indian pharmacy registration, and the enforcement of high ethical standards in all aspects of pharmacy services.

It also encourages chemists to incorporate the most recent pharmaceutical research into their work and to contribute to research. The draught bill provides adaptability to changing needs and aims to establish an effective grievance redressal procedure.

The Pharmacy Ethics and Registration Board, according to the draft, will keep a National Pharmacy Register with information on pharmacy practitioners to ensure openness.
