Qualcomm announced that it is integrating technology originally created for its laptop chips into its mobile phone chips in an effort to increase their capability for generative AI tasks.
The largest seller of mobile phone chips worldwide is the San Diego-based business. The corporation engaged a group of former Apple engineers in 2021 to help design laptop chips as part of its commercial expansion efforts. These chips went on market this year and are powering Microsoft's Windows artificial intelligence (AI) features.
For the first time, Qualcomm is incorporating the team's technology—a collection of proprietary computing tools it has named "Oryon"—into its mobile phone chips.
Additionally, the company has redesigned the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip's components to do jobs like text and image generation. In order to access such areas of the chip, Qualcomm will provide software developers with additional tools beyond those included in Alphabet's Android operating system.
"AI has been one of those where I think Google is moving fast, but we have our own technology to offer that end developer," Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager for mobile mobile devices at Qualcomm, said.
Qualcomm stated that the new chip will be used by Asustek Computer, Xiaomi, and Samsung Electronics, among other companies.
