Manmohan Singh's Death: The Government Announces Seven-day Mourning

Manmohan Singh, 92, a former prime minister and one of India's finest economists, died on Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi.

Manmohan Singh, whose career in the Indian government began in 1971 as an economic counselor in the commerce ministry, had long struggled with health concerns.

Manmohan Singh was born in Punjab in 1932 and served as India's prime minister twice, from 2004 until 2014. He departed from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, after 33 years of service.

From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to former US President Barack Obama, leaders from across the country and around the world, as well as ordinary residents, mourned Singh's death.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was brought to AIIMS Delhi on Thursday night after suffering an abrupt loss of consciousness at home. In critical condition, he was brought to the hospital's emergency department. However, he was unable to be revived and died at 9:51 p.m. on December 26, according to an AIIMS statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the passing of one of India's "most distinguished leaders" and praised Manmohan Singh's rise from low beginnings to become a famous economist. PM Modi recalled Singh's words, stating that "His wisdom and humility were always visible".

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Congress MP, expressed grief over the death of his "mentor and guide". In his X post, Rahul stated that millions of Indians who adored former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will "remember him with the utmost pride". Several other Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge, expressed grief over the former Prime Minister's death.

President Droupadi Murmu said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be remembered for his "service to the nation, his unblemished political life, and his utmost humility," adding that his death is a big loss to the country.

National industrialists, like Gautam Adani and Harsh Goenka, expressed their condolences over Manmohan Singh's death. In a post on X, Adani stated that history will always remember Singh's "pivotal role" in the 1991 reforms that changed India and opened its doors to the globe." The chairman of the Adani Group praised the former Prime Minister as a "rare leader who spoke softly but achieved monumental strides through his actions". Similarly, Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprise, described Singh as a "true statesman" and "an architect of economic reforms".

State chief ministers also condoled the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, describing him as a respected economist and national leader whose death is a great loss to India. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has set a 7-day state mourning period in honor of Manmohan Singh.
