In recent news, it has been made very clear by top companies about their preference of consultants in higher managerial roles. This trend first came to the limelight after Mckinsey AT Kearney BCG and Accenture became a favored destination of leadership talents. Naveen Tahilyani took charge of Tata AIA as CEO and MD from McKinsey early this year, while Sachin Nandgaonkar from BCG went to RPG Enterprises as president and CEO (speciality sector). Rajat Bhargava moved from McKinsey to Hero MotoCorpBSE as head of strategy and performance transformation. The benefits that these top notch companies are expecting to gain by hiring such consulting talents ranges from major organization shakeups to complete organizational transformation.

Consultants make the slow transition in an organization setup. Initially required to play strategic roles, they move up the ladder to reprise more important positions  such as CEO or Country head. Harsh Goenka, Chairman of the RPG Group says, “RPG group has for the first time appointed consultants in strategic roles to bring out of the box thinking and a certain bit of rigor into the organization.”

The best examples are of Vivek Gambhir and Subhanu Saxena, the early movers from a consultant role to a CEO role. Coming from a consultancy background, they're both set to take over as CEOs — Gambhir of Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) and Saxena of pharma major Cipla. As consulting companies are thriving, their talent pool is also getting widely recognized. The consultants, who are very process-driven, have worked in diverse areas of supply, distribution and strategic roles, making them valuable for the organization.
