According to a ministry of new and renewable energy statement, India's total renewable energy capacity increased by 24.2 GW or 13.5% annually, meeting the country's ambitious goals in the renewable energy sector. In October 2024, it reached 203.18 GW, up from 178.98 GW in the same period the previous year.
According to the report, the overall capacity of non-fossil fuels, including nuclear energy, increased to 211.36 GW in the current fiscal year from 186.46 GW in 2023.
Solar power
From 72.02 GW in October 2023 to 92.12 GW in October 2024, the solar sector had a notable increase of 20.1 GW (27.9%). The statement claims that the overall solar capacity, including projects that are being implemented and tendered, has increased significantly from 166.49 GW to 250.57 GW last year.
Wind power
The installed capacity of wind energy increased by 7.8% from 44.29 GW in October 2023 to 47.72 GW in October 2024, demonstrating steady growth as well. The total amount of wind project capacity currently under development is 72.35 GW.
Hydro power
Up till October 2024, major hydro projects have added 46.93 GW to India's renewable portfolio, compared to 8.18 GW from nuclear power.
India increased its renewable energy capacity by 12.6 GW between April and October 2024. 1.72 GW was installed in October 2024 alone, indicating a quicker shift to renewable energy.
As of October 2024, there were 89.69 GW of renewable energy projects tendered and 143.94 GW of renewable energy projects under implementation, representing a tremendous expansion.
This indicates consistent progress towards India's clean energy targets and is a notable increase from the 99.08 GW under implementation and the 55.13 GW tendered as of October 2023.
