The most recent Ericsson ConsumerLab Report for 2024, "Elevating 5G with Differentiated Connectivity," emphasizes important changes in consumer expectations and technological breakthroughs as India experiences fast digital transformation. More than 2,000 active 5G customers in Tier 1-3 cities in India are surveyed for the report, which represents an astounding 180 million urban consumers. According to their results, India is prepared for a new era of connectivity, one in which next-generation applications like GenAI and performance assurance will be crucial.

In Tier 3 cities, where user satisfaction has doubled annually and is on par with international norms for fiber internet and fixed wireless access (FWA), 5G adoption is still growing. 5G user satisfaction has increased from 48% in 2023 to 57% in 2024, primarily due to better performance and availability, particularly in less-connected areas.

In terms of the deployment of GenAI (generative artificial intelligence), India is becoming a global leader. With 21% of users actively investigating four or more AI apps, Indian users utilize GenAI applications twice as frequently as their US counterparts. These apps include everything from sophisticated photo and video editing software to AI writing tools and personalized shopping companions.

When choosing their next 5G-enabled smartphone, 32% of Indian smartphone users prioritize AI-powered capabilities over photo quality, according to the survey, demonstrating the growing desire from consumers for smart and responsive gadgets.

India's Smartphone Exports Have Increased by 70% In October, the necessity for dependable 5G connectivity is highlighted by India's thriving live events industry.

64% of users admit that there are issues with network quality in crowded areas, whether they are at cricket events or popular tourist destinations. Interestingly, one in six customers would be willing to pay 20% extra each month for guaranteed connectivity during these kinds of events, creating opportunities for premium subscription models.

It is anticipated that India's mobile traffic patterns would change as wearable technology and GenAI apps become more popular. Uplink traffic is expected to increase due to applications like AI-enhanced video processing and real-time 3D content creation, necessitating more reliable 5G infrastructure.

In order to handle growing traffic, Ericsson's analysis also predicts an industry trend toward semantic compression technology, especially as AR glasses and hybrid computing gadgets become more popular.

Apps with performance guarantees built in are becoming more and more popular among Indian consumers. Approximately 40% of those surveyed said they would like to shift 12% of their app purchases to higher-level connectivity offerings. Telecom companies are now in a position to investigate premium options like high-reliability and low-latency network tiers due to this development.
