Amazon is creating smart glasses to make navigation easier and faster for its delivery drivers. In order to transport products more quickly, these glasses would provide drivers with detailed instructions on a small screen, making it simpler for them to navigate through neighborhoods and buildings.
Under the code name "Amelia," the glasses would provide drivers with precise directions, even in confined spaces like apartment buildings or around gates. Additionally, they could alert vehicles to potential hazards like closed gates or pets. The eyewear would enable truckers to deliver more packages more quickly by freeing up their hands from using GPS gadgets. Amazon expects that even a few seconds saved every stop will have a significant impact, as they deliver millions of goods every day.
This action is a component of Amazon's attempt to reduce delivery costs, particularly in light of Walmart's increased rivalry and its new incentives for delivery drivers during the hectic holiday season.
The most difficult and costly aspect of the process is getting goods to customers' doorsteps. Amazon is trying to become more efficient because its delivery expenses increased to $23.5 billion in the most recent quarter. These smart glasses have potential, but they aren't yet ready. Problems like creating a battery that lasts the entire day while maintaining the glasses' comfort and light weight need to be resolved by Amazon. It may take years for the business to gather comprehensive maps of neighborhoods and delivery locations.
Convincing drivers to use the glasses—which some may find unpleasant or distracting—is another possible problem. Given that many of its drivers are employed by outside businesses that Amazon contracts with, the company may eventually mandate that drivers wear them.
The new delivery glasses are an improvement on Amazon's previous Echo Frames, which are smart glasses that let users to speak to Alexa and listen to music. But so far, Echo Frames haven't gained much traction. Amazon contradicts reports that less than 10,000 pairs of the most recent model have been sold. By 2026, Amazon plans to release a new Echo Frames model with a comparable screen.
The eyewear' eventual release is not guaranteed. The project may be postponed or canceled if Amazon is unable to improve the battery or technology.
