But the plot of the movie surrounding the Earth becoming unlivable due to the ill effects of pollution also gave the world some food for thought. The implications of pollution are known to all but most of us are unaware of the catastrophic levels of danger that this phenomenon has reached, especially in India. A report published by WHO concluded that out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world, 10 are in India! According to another report published in the Geographical Research Letters, outdoor air pollution in India contributes to more than half a million premature deaths each year at the cost of hundreds of billions of dollars. The menace has reached catastrophic levels in India and causes more loss of life than even terrorism. The rise in pollution levels across the country can be attributed to various factors. Widespread unplanned development, migration of people from rural areas to urban areas, inefficient vehicles and other means of fuel guzzling transports, burning of waste matter, pollution from fossil-fuel powered power plants, and other dirty industries are a few of them. Although the government has taken steps to counter these challenges however, the country still has a long way to go.A major ally for the government in this fight against pollution is pollution control consultants. This growing sector is witnessing the entry of several consultants who are working across the country to mitigate all kinds of pollution, be it air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution or land pollution.
