| |MARCH 20194Consultants ReviewEditor's NoteIP-backed Innovation is Steering Economic GrowthIf you have never heard about Napster Inc., that is mostly because the peer-to-peer music file-sharing venture no longer exists. In 2000, A&M Record Inc. and superstars including Dr. Dre and Metallica claimed that Napster's software - which allowed twenty million users to freely share MP3 files of their favorite music online was unlawful. With intangible assets existing in the form of brands, designs, content, technology or innovation, intellectual property can be claimed in any format including trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Eventually, RIAA sued Napster and won, causing Napster to close its doors citing copyright infringement. While most large businesses have created and maintained enforcement on a large intellectual property portfolio, many small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) wait too long into their development to get intellectual property protection.Today, economic growth is not just technology driven, it is innovation driven. One of the important factors for the growth of the economy is the contribution made by new knowledge which results in the development of newer innovations. According to a study by Harvard University, India is expected to remain among the fastest-growing economies with an estimated annual growth rate of 7.7 percent until 2025. Simultaneously, the 2017 Global Innovation Index -- a joint initiative by business school Insead, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), and Cornell University -- ranked India 60 out of 127 countries, indicating steady progress from its rank of 81 in 2015. With more growth and investment, new players are on the rise and with the rapid advancements in technology, the protection, and enforcement of intellectual property have gained more importance. With the demand for Intellectual Property protection rising faster than the rate of global economic growth, it is clear that IP-backed innovation is an increasingly critical component of competition and commercial activity.
