India Thrives on 'Atithi Devo Bhava'

Indian Tourism and Hospitality industry has now become a sun-rise industry, offering numerous career options and a significant source of foreign income for the country. The travel & tourism sector in India accounted for 8 percent of the total employment opportunities generated in the country in 2017, providing employment to around 41.6 million people during the same year. The number is expected to rise by 2 percent annum to 52.3 million jobs by 2028. International hotel chains are increasing their presence in the country, as it will account for around 47 percent share in the Tourism & Hospitality sector of India by 2020 and 50 percent by 2022. Evidently, India’s tourism and hospitality industry is emerging to be one of the key industries which are driving the growth of the services sector and, thereby, the Indian economy. Indians are firm believers of Hindu philosophy ‘atithi devo bhava’, which implies that all guests are equivalent to god, even the ones uninvited, and this clearly depicts that the roots of hospitality industry lies ages ago. While commercialization of hospitality industry has just become a trend, there are already numerous budget hotels, five-star properties, homestays and boutique resorts to cater the needs of each and every traveler.

With numerous companies investing in the hospitality industry and various banks ready to fund this idea, recent years have witnessed a rise in number of people vesting their focus towards this domain.
